We say
A good quality car, but not significantly better than the rivals in the range. The Golf is an all-round better buy.
Performance
There's a strong and varied line-up of engines - five petrols and two diesels. Both 2.0-litres are flexible and assured, with the 3.2-litre petrol giving more oomph for your money. A wide range of strong engines to fit every requirement.
Emissions
Over 70 mpg is a possibility in the most frugal diesel, while new engines ensure that most Audi A3 models offer respectable performance and emission figures.
Driving
Strong grip and cornering from the A3, which offers decent – if not class-leading handling.
Feel
Stiffened suspension may be uncomfortable on Sport models. However, all told the Audi A3 is one of the more refined cars on the road.
Space
A roomy interior on three- and five-door A3s, with decent boot space of between 350-1100 litres available.
Equipment
Alloy wheels, electric windows and remote central locking is standard throughout the range. No CD player or air con on the entry-level model though.
Price
A rather hefty £16,000 at entry-level, with prices straying to the early-20s. Running costs excellent on some models though and A3 residual prices should be good.
Quality
Solid and sturdy, with good-quality VW engines and a strong interior.
Safety
Six airbags as standard, stability control and brakeforce control as standard. Failed to take maximum points in Euro NCAP tests however.
Pros
It's an Audi so the ride is good, it's well-made and it looks great.
Cons
Loses marks for mean kit levels on standard models, for a below-par NCAP score and for looking its age.
Alternatives
