We say If you want a small Mercedes car the A-Class is worth a look. However, if you’re looking for a cheaper hatchback this is not the car for you.Performance There are plenty of engines catering for every need. 2.0-litre petrol models and 109bhp diesel are ones to look out for as a good balance between efficiency and performance.Emissions Despite its age, the A-Class is surprisingly frugal. You can squuese 64mpg out of the BlueEfficiency model (the most efficient diesel) and CO2 emissions are as low as 116g/km, or Band B of UK Vehicle Excise Duty (VED).Driving There is good grip with the Mercedes A-Class but some body roll. Steering is light but short on feedback leaving it trailing behind the likes of the Volkswagen Golf.Feel Petrol engines are all quiet unless being revved, while the diesels are generally noisy. Not as well insulated as larger Mercedes cars, but not bad either.Space The upright stance and high roofline of the A-Class means there is plenty of room in the cabin. At the rear, a large, well-shaped boot is extended by 60/40 folding rear seats.Equipment CD player and electric front windows are standard but aircon and alloys are optional extras. Higher trim levels offer more equipment.Price The engines offer low running costs and the A-Class delivers strong residual values. List price starts cheap but gets dear at the top end of trim levels. This may be necessary to get some of the more useful kit.Quality Despite its five-door hatchback style and lower starting price compared to the more executive Mercedes cars, it still feels like a Mercedes in terms of build quality and use of materials.Safety The A-Class comes with Stability control, ABS and four airbags on every model. It also received a maximum NCAP safety rating in the older tests.Pros The Mercedes A-Class is a good small car built to a high quality specification. It should enjoy high residual values and drivers will enjoy the prestige of the Mercedes badge. It also comes with frugal BlueEfficiency diesel engines.Cons Lower-end trim levels could be better equipped considering the starting price while ride quality and handling is a little behind key rivals.Alternatives Volkswagen Golf, BMW 1 Series.
