We say Not only will it last it’s cheap to, although this cheapness is reflected by the sharp ride and low refinement.Performance There are four engines to choose from, starting with a 1.6-litre VVT petrol with 105bhp which feels weak. There is alternatively a 2.4-litre version with 166bhp which is much better. It offers the best performance figures, with a 0-62mph time of 11.7 seconds and a top speed of up to 115mph. The other available engine, a 1.9-litre DDiS diesel, is also good for pulling power.Emissions The Grand Vitara is not that environmentally friendly to be honest. The 1.9-litre DDiS diesel is your best bet, in the highest-spec SZ 5 trim the SUV has a fuel economy of 41mpg and emits 179g/km in CO2. The petrol engines fair worse, emitting up to as much as 228g/km in CO2.Driving Grip levels are high and the firm suspension keep body movement in check. The Vitara handles well both on and off the road.Feel The SUV feels composed behind the wheel but is let down by a choppy ride which never settles and gets worse in the three-door version.Space Both the three-door and five-door models offer a decent amount of headroom. Legroom is also good all-round in the five-door, but in the three-door the back should only really be used for children. The boot space can hold 398 litres with all the seats up.Equipment There are loads of specifications for the Grand Vitara. As standard you get climate control, a CD player and alloy wheels. Higher spec trims bring in luxuries like privacy glass, cruise control and leather upholstery.Price The pricing range currently varies from £15,995 to £23,265.Quality The cabin is solidly build and the materials used look like they’ll last long. The drive is not well refined however; road and wind noise is noticeable, while all engines except the 2.4 litre petrol are noisy.Safety The Grand Vitara got a four star rating in the Euro NCAP crash safety test.
