Buyer’s guide to the 2022 Hyundai i30

Hyundai’s well-made hatch is packed with features and equipment

Hyundai has made a real name for itself through its creation of high-value yet well-made cars that enter into all manner of hotly-contested segments. The i30 has been a core offering in the firm’s range for quite a while, with this good-to-drive model bringing space and practicality as well as a whole lot of standard equipment. 

These central values are still present in the 2022 version. This updated i30 gains a range of efficient engines with mild-hybrid assistance, while its exterior design has been tweaked to offer a more upmarket, premium feel. Inside, there’s Hyundai’s latest technology including a 10.25-inch infotainment screen which really looks the part. 

Today, we’re going to take a look through what else this updated i30 has to offer. 

What engines are available?

The i30 is available with a pair of efficient turbocharged petrol engines which bring decent economy figures as well as a surprising amount of punch. 

The entry-level 1.0-litre comes as standard with a six-speed manual transmission and boasts 48-volt mild-hybrid technology too. It works by allowing the engine to decouple from the gearbox, giving the car the ability to coast and - very occasionally - turn off entirely as a way of boosting efficiency. There’s also the option to have this engine with a DCT automatic gearbox. 

Then, there’s a more powerful 1.5-litre engine that pushes out over 150bhp yet has reasonably low CO2 emissions of 122g/km. Much like the 1.0-litre, it’s available with the option of either manual or automatic gearboxes. 

What trim levels are offered?

SE Connect - from £21,250

SE Connect kicks off the range but, in typical Hyundai fashion, still comes with plenty of equipment as standard. You get 16-inch alloy wheels included at this grade, as well as body-coloured bumpers and door mirrors. 

Inside, there’s a leather-wrapped steering wheel, as well as an eight-inch touchscreen display with a secondary 3.5-inch display ahead of the driver. All cars come equipped with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, too. 

N Line - from £25,200

Step up to sporty N Line grade and you’ll find 18-inch alloy wheels now added, alongside distinctive black door mirrors and a black front grille. A full N Line exterior package is also included, which gives the i30 a far more dynamic appearance. A special twin-muffler rear exhaust is also added, as are N Line-branded seats. 

The larger 10.25-inch touchscreen is also added at this grade, as is a seven-inch driver’s display. Satellite navigation is fitted as standard as well. 

Premium - from £24,200

Finally, there’s Premium which, as you might expect, gets all the very tip-top equipment. Premium cars ride on 17-inch alloy wheels and get a black front grille, while inside the i30 heads upmarket courtesy of heated leather-finished seats. Climate control is also added at this grade, as are front and rear parking sensors and an electronic parking brake. 

Much like the N-Line, Premium cars boast the larger 10.25-inch screen with satellite navigation, while a wireless charging pad makes it easier to top-up your smartphone when on the move, too. 

What about personalisation?

If you’re after a little extra personalisation then the i30 has plenty to offer. The different trim levels tweak how the interior looks, while N Line’s distinctive exterior styling pack will no doubt appeal to those drivers who want to stand out a little more. 

There are also a wide variety of exterior colours to choose from, including pearlescent reds and metallic bronzes.
