MG’s sales have continued to climb in recent years, with the brand’s value-packed models really appealing to those looking for a new car that doesn’t cost a fortune.
Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular for the brand, too, with the MG5 proving a welcome addition since its launch in 2020. It’s the first electric estate car of its kind, while bringing plenty of equipment and MG’s seven-year warranty as standard.
Now MG has taken things further with the introduction of a Long Range model. Here’s what you need to know about it before buying.
What powertrains are available?
While MG briefly offered the standard car alongside the new Long Range model, this latter option is now the only model available – no bad thing as it’s the one you’d want to go for anyway.
Using an electric motor developing 154bhp and 260Nm of torque, it lets this somewhat sensible estate car hit 60mph in as little as 7.3 seconds, and it’s very quick off the line. It also uses a 61.1kWh battery, of which 57.7kWh can be used, which lets this MG travel a claimed 250 miles from a single charge – more than most EVs at this price point.
Using a 100kW public rapid charger, its battery can be charged to 80 per cent in 40 minutes, while plugged in at home with a 7kW wallbox, it will take 9.5 hours in optimal conditions.
What trim levels are offered?
One way MG manages to keep its costs down is by not offering a vast number of trim levels, and there are just two versions available on the MG5, though each comes with plenty of kit. Equipment highlights and pricing are as follows.
Excite – from £27,945 (including plug-in car grant)
Even as the entry-level version, the Excite comes with plenty of goodies. Highlights include an eight-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while you also get keyless entry, a seven-inch digital driver display and a reversing camera. Plenty of standard safety features are provided too, such as autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, high beam assist and adaptive cruise control.
Exclusive – from £30,445 (including plug-in car grant)
Upgrade to the Exclusive and it brings high-end features such as keyless entry, heated front seats, an electric driver’s seat and leather-style upholstery. It also comes with climate control, silver roof rails, automatic wipers and an auto dimming rear-view mirror.
What about personalisation?
Personalisation isn’t a particular highlight of the MG5, though there are five colours to choose from – Arctic White, Piccadilly Blue (pictured), Westminster Silver, Black Pearl and Dynamic Red.
