Having been a staple of the Jaguar range since 1968, the XJ moniker comes with prestige and is currently the brand’s most premium offering.
Despite the current model being first introduced back in 2009, it comes with plenty of high-end equipment thanks to multiple mid-life updates.

What power options are there?
Just one engine is currently fitted to the XJ – likely down to the fact a new version is not too far away. So the only unit is a 3.0-litre, turbocharged V6 diesel engine that develops 296bhp and 700Nm of torque, which is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
With that unit on-board, you can get the XJ from 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds and it can go on to a top speed of 155mph. It can also offer reasonable fuel returns, with both the standard and long-wheelbase options capable of achieving 40.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 184g/km.
What trim levels are there?
Customers have the choice of six specifications – Luxury, Premium Luxury, Portfolio, Autobiography, XJ50 and R-Sport – and as you expect from a large saloon, there is a lot of kit as standard. The Luxury model comes with heated front and rear seats, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment with navigation and Bluetooth, an enhanced sound system, climate control, front and rear parking sensors, LED headlights, chrome detailing and soft-close doors.
Higher spec models can come with leather upholstery, a Meridian sound system, digital TV, massaging front seats, LED daytime running lights, adaptive high beam, surround view camera, park assist and rear entertainment screens. With these options, customers will be able to find the right luxury saloon option that suits them best.
How much customisation is there?
With a series of alloy wheel, interior trim and body colour options, it won’t be difficult to find the right XJ for you.
As it is a premium saloon, there are multiple equipment packs that help to provide airline-style comfort. For example, the Premium Rear Seat pack adds massaging and reclining seats to the rear, as well as rear entertainment screens, tables and winged headrests so that passengers in the back will have almost everything they need. But the Autobiography model comes with the majority of those options – so you may be better off looking at that version of the XJ.
How much does the XJ cost?
The XJ has a starting price of £62,360 to compete with similar models, such as the BMW 7 Series and Audi A8. The best option though is the Autobiography, which comes with a serious amount of kit and a starting price of £83,105.
