The third generation Fiesta ST is now here, and it has already won heaps of praise, including the prestigious accolade of CarKeys Hot Hatch of the Year.
But what makes it special, and what do you need to know before you buy one?
How many versions are available?
There are three different levels of ST that you can choose from. They are:
ST – which comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, Recaro sports seats, air con, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, electric heated wing mirrors, DAB radio with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, cruise control, lane-keeping assist and a speed limiter.
ST-2 – this adds climate control, heated seats, blue ST sports seatbelts a larger touchscreen and an upgraded Bang & Olufsen stereo system.
ST-3 – sports red brake callipers, 18-inch alloys, sat nav, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rear view mirror and driver assistance features including traffic sign recognition, auto high beam and driver alert.
The ST is available as both a three and a five-door.
Are any upgrade packs available?
Yes, there are. The Performance Pack adds a Quaife limited slip diff, launch control and performance shift lights, while full LED headlights are also available as an option.
What’s under the bonnet?
The ST uses a new three-cylinder 1.5-litre engine developing 196bhp and 290Nm of torque. The power is transmitted to the road via a six-speed manual gearbox.
What’s the performance like?
It’s quick – 0-60mph is dispatched in just 6.5 seconds, with a top speed of 144mph.

It’s really not bad – thanks to clever cylinder deactivation technology, the ST switches off and re-engages its cylinders significantly faster than the blink of an eye. As a result, it achieves a combined MPG figure of 47.1mpg and CO2emissions of 136g/km.
What’s its coolest feature?
The ST comes with three driving modes – Normal, Sport and Track, which modify engine, throttle response and damper settings.
But the coolest feature by far is its Electronic Sound Enhancement, which amplifies the car’s exhaust note via an active exhaust noise control valve. It serves little purpose other than to alter the soundtrack when pressing on. But that in itself is enough.
What about tech?
There’s lots of it. As well as the latest Ford SYNC3 infotainment system, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Smartphone replication, the ST features leading safety tech – blind spot alert, reverse cross traffic detection, lane-keeping assist and traffic sign recognition. It’s a clever car, and a very safe one, too, scoring a maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating.
When can I buy one?
The ST is available to order now, with the first cars due for delivery in the next few weeks.
