Audi has revealed its all-new RS6 Avant – a sportier version of its A6 Avant that seamlessly combines performance and practicality.
This is the fourth-generation of Audi’s famed RS6, which utilises a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine producing 592bhp and 800Nm of torque, enabling a 0-60mph time of 3.4 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph.
Power is delivered by an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox to all four wheels. The RS6 also now comes with Launch Control – for even better traction off the line, where permitted.
But importantly this is the first RS model to be electrified, with the RS6 Avant featuring mild-hybrid technology. This system essentially allows for energy to be recovered when the car is decelerating, which is then stored in a lithium-ion battery. Automatic cylinder deactivated technology also aims to maximise efficiency.
In typical with RS styling, Audi has transformed the sedate A6 Avant into a particularly menacing-looking model. In fact, it’s only the front doors, roof and tailgate that are carried over from the regular car. It’s also fitted with huge 21-inch alloy wheels, flared wheel arches and Matrix LED headlights.
The front is also headed up by a wide honeycomb grille and new RS-specific bumpers – each being a feature of the flagship R8 supercar.
See Available RS 6 DealsIn the cabin the RS6 carries over the A6’s superb twin touchscreen setup and Virtual (digital) cockpit, but gains its own bespoke sporty touches. A unique ‘RS Monitor’ allows drivers to see performance dials – such as the maximum g forces. The digital dials also come with a specific sporty look, while the cabin also benefits from RS sports seats tripped in leather with a honeycomb pattern.
Elsewhere the RS6 Avant grows in size to become yet more spacious – it’s important that the practicality of this model is just as important as the performance. With the rear seats folded, the boot offers a huge 1,680 litres, while an electric boot is also fitted as standard.
Order books for the RS6 open in November, with buyers able to choose between the standard model or the range-topping Vorsprung, with prices expected to start from around £80,000. First deliveries will start in January 2020.
