BMW PHEVs: What’s new for 2020?

BMW has one of the most extensive plug-in hybrid line-ups available

When it comes to plug-in hybrids, BMW is one of the leaders with an extensive line-up that spans from MPVs to saloons to SUVs.

These models are a great option for those doing primarily smaller trips, which can be done purely on electricity, but with the flexibility of having a petrol engine for longer journeys, without having the need to stop and charge all the time.

BMW already has plenty of PHEVs in its range, but for 2020, it’s introduced a host of new options. Here’s a look at the latest new BMW plug-in hybrids…

New 330e derivatives

The plug-in hybrid version of the BMW 3 Series – the 330e – has proven a big hit, with many choosing it over conventional petrol and diesel models.

Up until now, though, you could only choose it as a saloon, but BMW has recently introduced a plug-in hybrid Touring (estate) version, which will be the first time a BMW estate car has been available as a PHEV. A new all-wheel-drive option can be chosen alongside the standard rear-wheel-drive configuration.

Revised 530e

BMW has recently updated its popular 5 Series – a model that’s been available for several years with a plug-in hybrid powertrain (the 530e). While the powertrain itself hasn’t changed, the rest of the car has.

Key changes include a subtle styling update, which is headed up by a wider front grille and slimmer headlights, along with new alloy wheels. In the cabin you get a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen (up from 10.25 inches), along with additional driver assistance kit.

A new six-cylinder BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid

BMW is also set to introduce a new more powerful six-cylinder plug-in hybrid version with the 545e, which will sit alongside the 530e derivative.

Details are still yet to be announced, but it’s set to appeal to those wanting additional performance but the same lower running costs. The 5 Series Touring is also set to be available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the first time, too.

New X1 and X2 plug-in hybrids

Also introduced this year are new petrol-electric versions of BMW’s two junior SUVs – the X1 and X2. Both are badged as the ‘xDrive25e’, and feature the same plug-in powertrain as the 225xe and the Mini Countryman Plug-in Hybrid.

Given these are two of BMW’s most popular cars, a new plug-in hybrid version of each is only set to elevate these practical family models further.

New X3 PHEV

The X3 is BMW’s mid-size SUV, and a very appealing model in its line-up – not least for those wanting a premium family car. It’s always been a model that would suit a plug-in hybrid powertrain, but until now buyers haven’t had that option.

But with key rivals from Audi, Mercedes and Volvo all having plug-in rivals to the X3, a new xDrive30e PHEV version has been launched. This features the same plug-in setup as the 330e and 530e and is set to be a big hit with company car drivers, who the X3 has a lot of appeal to anyway.

Impressive X5 xDrive45e

Joining the BMW line-up right at the start of 2020 was a new plug-in hybrid version of the firm’s large SUV.

While the BMW X5 has been offered as a PHEV in previous generations, this new car has impressed on many fronts – not least because its large 24kWh battery allows for a superb 54-mile electric range. That’s one of the lengthiest of any hybrid model, and means you could do the majority of your trips in this BMW without having to use the petrol engine whatsoever.
