BMW reveals X6 so dark, you can hardly see it…

Coated in Vantablack paint finish, this BMW X6 is like a void to the human eye

Ever wanted a car so dark that nobody can see it? Well, BMW has you covered.

This one-off BMW X6 has been finished in a paint that utilises a material called Vantablack, which the firm says is ‘the world’s blackest black’.

Said to be the first vehicle in the world using the material, its creator, UK-based Surrey NanoSystems, claims to have been approached by a number of manufacturers previously but turned those offers down. It says the X6 was selected as a result of its ‘unique’ and ‘expressive’ design.

Specifically, the BMW X6 here uses ‘VBx2’ — a Vantablack variant designed for architectural and scientific use, with the material originally developed for use on space-bound components.

It’s said to absorb 99.97 per cent of light, tricking the human eye into seeing any object its applied to as almost like a dark void. As a result, the X6’s design details are effectively invisible on this showcar.

Don’t reach for your wallets just yet, as the BMW X6 Vantablack remains as a one-off show car for next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show for the time being. That said, enough customer demand could change that…
