Check your car meets clean air zone standards with a new online tool

Government launches online tool that makes finding out if you’ll have to pay more to drive in clean air zones simple.

It’s now simple and easy to see if your car will incur extra charges when you drive in clean air zones thanks to a new tool launched by the government.

Accessible on the gov.uk website, drivers in Birmingham and Leeds can see if their vehicle meets requirements to drive in upcoming zones or if they’ll have to pay extra.

Leeds will introduce a ‘Class B’ zone that puts additional costs on drivers of older buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles and HGVs driving through — so for the time being, private car users should be exempt from any cost

Birmingham builds on this with a ‘Class D’ zone that does apply extra charges to some vans and older vehicles. Both will come into force later in 2020

Using the website, drivers simply have to enter their vehicle’s registration and which zone they plan to drive through. They will then be told if they have to pay extra and, if so, how much.

Though not confirmed, it has been hinted upcoming zones in Sheffield and Bath will also be covered by the service. London’s ULEZ however has its own dedicated service.
