Ford has introduced an even more capable version of its best-selling Transit that can handle five tonnes of weight.
Simply called the ‘5.0-tonne Transit’, the new model is the most capable model ever produced by the firm thanks to its gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 5,000kg.
Ford says its popular Transit has received significant mechanical updates to ensure it can handle the extra weight. It now offers the highest GVM of any van in Europe – having a payload of 2,283kg in panel van form or 2,558kg as a flatbed. This is 300kg more than the next best Transit.
The firm says it is aiming to appeal to customers wanting donor vehicles for conversions like tippers, ambulances, 19-seat minibuses and police vans with the new version. Companies can also use Ford’s ‘Qualified Vehicle Modifier’ programme to help with any conversions needed.
It’s available with three wheelbases, four frame lengths and single- or double cab formats, with seating for up to seven.
All five-tonne models come with an 168bhp 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine, which is available with a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic gearbox. All versions are rear-wheel-drive. Mechanical changes next to the regular Transit include wider rear tyres, uprated brakes on the rear axle and a reinforced body.

Pricing for the new model is yet to be announced, though it’s set to arrive in showrooms from the end of November.
