July's best-selling cars revealed

Here we name the models that proved the most popular last month

Things are quite turbulent across the automotive industry at the moment, as car production continues to be hit by supply chain shortages and the ‘pingdemic’.

Despite this, 123,296 new cars were registered in July, while demand for electrified models continues to soar, with electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid cars all increasing in popularity. In fact, nearly one in five cars registered last month was either electric or a plug-in hybrid.

But what about the cars that proved to be the most popular? Let’s take a look.

1. Volkswagen Polo, 3,047 registered

It’s all changed at the top this month, as the Volkswagen Polo tops the charts as the best-selling in July – outselling the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa with 3,047 examples registered.

This result is all the more impressive given Volkswagen is shortly launching an updated version of its Polo, gaining sharper styling and new technology. But this outgoing supermini is more than able to hold its own with a roomy interior, comfortable ride and superb build quality.

2. Toyota Yaris, 3,001

Though Toyota’s Yaris has always been a popular model, it rarely features this high up the charts. But with just over 3,000 sold, it’s ranked as the second most popular car in July, and by a decent margin too.

The new Yaris (bar the ‘GR’ hot hatch version) is only available with efficient hybrid powertrains, with generous standard equipment levels and sharp styling meaning it’s tempting many buyers out of other models in this class.

3. Kia Sportage, 2,631

Kia’s Sportage is now a hugely popular model in its class, and is the third best-selling model in July, with 2,631 registered. With its mix of practicality, affordable starting prices and Kia’s generous seven-year warranty, it’s a big hit with families.

It also looks the part, especially in the sportier GT-Line version, and though Kia will be introducing a new model in the next few months, it’s doing little to quash any demand for the current version.

4. Ford Puma, 2,621

Ford is having a huge success with its Puma crossover, with this model outselling the brand’s popular Fiesta and Focus in July. In fact, it’s the best selling SUV in 2021 so far.

With its practical interior, fun driving experience and efficient mild-hybrid petrol engines, it’s no surprise that it’s proving so popular, while a sporty ST model really turns up the thrills for those wanting an alternative to a hot hatch.

5. Volkswagen Golf, 2,362

With the latest Volkswagen Golf line-up complete, this model is really finding its feet with buyers who appreciate its classy image, tech-laden interior and spacious cabin.

Whether it’s an affordable petrol version, a plug-in hybrid or a hot hatch, the Golf certainly has plenty to offer, while an Estate model is also available for those wanting something a bit more practical.

6. Audi A3, 2,300

With sales of 2,300 in July, the Audi A3 just falls short of its Volkswagen Golf sibling car, though it outsells key premium competitors from Mercedes and BMW in the process.

With an elegant design, well-built interior and broad range of derivatives, it’s easy to see why the A3 appeals to those wanting a more upmarket family hatchback, though a saloon is also available for those that prefer this body style.

7. Mercedes A-Class, 2,186

Though the Mercedes A-Class might not be as high up the charts as is customary, it continues to be a popular choice, with 2,186 examples of the brand’s most affordable being registered in July.

It remains a seriously credible option in this class too, with a tech-laden interior that outshines many in its class, as well as a huge range of versions to choose from – including a plug-in hybrid and hot hatchback with more than 400bhp.

8. Mini, 2,138

The Mini remains in the charts this month, and is the only British-built car to feature in July’s top 10. Thanks to a recent update, this supermini looks as stylish as ever, while it’s also fantastic to drive.

The Electric model is also really gathering momentum, particularly with urban drivers that are comfortable with its 145-mile range.

9. Ford Fiesta, 2,010

Ford’s Fiesta is certainly a lot lower down this chart than we’re used to, though given the model retains its position as the second best-selling car in 2020 so far, it’s far from disappointing.

If you want an affordable supermini that’s good to drive and well-equipped, it continues to be one of the best in this market, while the addition of trims like the rugged Active and upmarket Vignale offer plenty of choice to buyers.

10. Hyundai Kona, 2,006

Last but not least is a name we don’t normally see on this list – the Hyundai Kona. Benefitting from a recent update, this funky-looking crossover is bolder than ever, while it also gets a raft of new technology, too.

But the key draw to it – and likely where the bulk of these sales have come from – is a superb ‘Electric’ model that offers a seriously impressive range of 300 miles between charges.
