New update may allow you to unlock car using your iPhone

It would mean drivers can unlock their vehicles with less hassle.

Apple may soon allow users of an iPhone to be able to use these devices as a car key.

As part of the Californian technology giant’s latest beta testing for its iOS 13.4 update, a new ‘CarKey’ function has been added, according to Apple experts 9to5Mac.

It would essentially allow your phone to work as it would with a keyless car, and means that you would be able to access the car using your iPhone or Apple Watch. The car would have to be equipped with something known as NFC (near-field communication), which essentially allows two electronic devices to communicate with each other.

It also won’t require any FaceID or password to be entered, rather the phone will just have to be held near the car to unlock it.

It’s set to work by the car being paired the device in the ‘Wallet’ app of an Apple device, and it will also need you to install the manufacturer-approved app for the locking and unlocking to be able to take place. Drivers will also be able to share access with family and friends, too.

While this technology is not new, with many firms already allowing remote unlocking and locking of a car, it’s the first time that the remote unlocking has been bundled into Apple’s own software.

Further details of the technology are expected in the coming months ahead of the full release of iOS 13.4.
