As car manufacturers become more engrossed in the electric vehicle world, that means we get to see more futuristic designs and concepts with zero-emission powertrains.
In the United Kingdom especially, which is banning the sale of petrol and diesel-powered vehicles by 2040, electric vehicle sales are on the rise, and that gives motoring firms even more scope with their ideas for electric-powered models.
More and more electrified models will be revealed in the coming years, but here are ten in the next year or so that will be coming to the market…
Audi e-tron
This all-electric SUV is still currently in its prototype phase, but after being driven for more than three million miles around the world since the start of its project, the e-tron SUV is nearly here. With a range over 300 miles, everyday usability and great Audi features, the e-tron will be on sale by the close of 2018.
Mercedes Generation EQ
Unlike market rivals Audi and Jaguar, Mercedes is slightly behind on the all-electric SUV front to fit in with the current market trends. But the Mercedes EQ C is now in development and it would return more than 300 miles of range. Design-wise it would carry on the current Mercedes ethos both outside and in, and would be on the market closer to the end of 2019.
Tesla Model 3
Although it was announced back in 2016, UK customers are not yet able to get their hands on the latest release from the American manufacturer. With a max range of 310 miles, the executive saloon will be the most affordable model in the Tesla line-up and is already well in production – with British customers expecting orders to come through soon.
Skoda Superb PHEV
With Skoda’s rather excellent and affordable Superb due for a new model in the next year or two, it is more than likely that the large saloon will come with an electrified powertrain option – with that likely to be a plug-in hybrid. The Czech brand will be using tech from parent company Volkswagen to help with this, and the Superb PHEV won’t be the only electrified model from them…
Skoda e-Citigo
It was confirmed at this year’s Geneva Motor Show that the Citigo will be the first Skoda to be fully electric. Although the Superb plug-in is going to come first, this will be a ground-breaking model for Skoda as an all-electric city car to follow the Volkswagen e-Up! and Seat e-Mii. This will have a much larger range though, expected to be close to 200 miles.
Volvo XC40 PHEV
To move in-line with the V90 and XC90 models, the XC40 is due to be fitted with a plug-in hybrid powertrain by the end of next year. As the 2018 European Car of the Year has proven to be incredibly popular so far, an electrified powertrain would only enhance its market standing.
Jaguar I-Pace
The all-electric SUV from Jaguar has been teased, tested and fully unveiled in the last 18 months, and in that time, it has become a vehicle that has intrigued and interested much of the motoring world. Capable of going more than 300 miles on a single charge, the I-Pace has a starting price of £63,495 and deliveries will begin later this year.
Polestar 1
As the performance arm of Volvo, Polestar will be producing dynamic, electrified vehicles from the end of this year, and the 1 is the first to come from the Swedish brand. Using a plug-in hybrid setup and a Volvo chassis, the 1 is currently only available on a subscription-only contract, but certainly looks the part as a performance coupe.
BMW i8 Roadster
Following on from the success of the i8 Coupe, the long-awaited and teased Roadster is finally on its way to the road. Although it won’t be cheap at just under £125,000, the soft-top i8 is expected to deliver the same exciting performance delivered by the original hard-roofed model when it debuted three years ago.
Hyundai Kona Electric
Based on the latest addition to the South Korean brand’s SUV line-up, the Kona Electric is expected to go on sale later in 2018. As the first electric compact SUV, the Kona Electric is due to ruffle many feathers in the segment and come with much more range than any potential rivals – close to 300 miles in fact.
