We say A good saving of a couple of grand might coax people away from the German elite marques, but the IS a few steps behind.Performance 204bhp 2.5-litre V6 petrol needs working hard, but is good through the lower gears, and the auto box is smooth. The 2.2-litre diesel produces 150bhp but needs short-shifting to get through the low gears. Otherwise it's smooth and torquey.Emissions IS diesels return 55mpg combined and emit a lowly 134g/km. Running costs on the other models are not impressive.Driving No body roll, good grip, with the wider wheels providing good cornering, but the IS’s ride is firm and the steering not the most responsive.Feel Diesels clatter a little through the early gears, and there's some wind noise inside the cabin.Space Good space front, poor space back, boot is an awkward shape and poor size at 280 litres.Equipment Very well specced, with cruise control, great stereo system with CD player, climate control and alloys as standard on the IS.Price The IS compares well to other luxury execs, especially as it's so well-kitted. High emissions and fuel consumption on the petrol model are not attractive though.Quality The IS’s interior is luxurious and the car generally feels sturdy. Lexus build quality is excellent.Safety Loads of safety kit which means the IS is a very safe car – five Euro NCAP safety stars.Pros Good performance, loads of kit, good safety, well made.Cons Poor space in the rear.Alternatives Mercedes C-Class, BMW 3-Series, Audi A4
