We say
The A3 Sportback is essentially a slightly larger five-door A3 – and an expensive one at that.
Performance
There's a vast range of flexible engines that should cater for any needs. Both 2.0-litres are flexible and assured, with the 3.2-litre petrol giving more oomph for your money.
Emissions
Low-consumption models and high-performance diesel mean the A3 Sportback can return in the mid-60smpg when it comes to fuel economy and emit under 120g/km.
Driving
The A3 Sportback can claim decent driving manners, with good grip, but slightly underwhelming steering. A good cruiser though – and a safe performer. Quattro models feel decidedly more engaging to drive.
Feel
The lower-powered models can be noisy but the cabin is well-insulated from engine noise and the elements. As a result of that – and the supple ride – the A3 Sportback makes a good motorway cruiser.
Space
Great space for the driver and front passenger but the rear is cramped, despite the five doors and slightly larger interior. Boasts 20 litres more boot space than the three-door model, at 380 litres, extending to over 1,000.
Equipment
Lots of standard safety kit but entry-level models want for kit. You’ll need to put your hand in your pocket or upgrade to a higher trim level for many toys.
Price
The Audi A3 Sportback is expensive but will maintain residuals well.
Quality
High quality interiors, good engines, great build quality.
Safety
Every A3 Sportback has deadlocks, central locking and an alarm. Same spec as the Audi A3 with six airbags, stability control and traction control as standard.
Pros
It's an Audi A3 with a bit more space.
Cons
It's an Audi A3 with a bit more space at £500 more.
