BMW 5 Series Saloon

The big German saloon is one of the most refined cars in its class, everything a 5 Series should be.

We say

The big German saloon is one of the most refined cars in its class, everything a 5 Series should be.

Performance

While the 402bhp V8 engine is the best performer, all engines are well matched to the 5 Series. The 201bhp 525d stands out as being very versatile with lower running costs but strong performance, but the frugal 520d is still very torquey and fast.

Emissions

Impressive emissions as low as 132g/km and fuel consumption as good as 57.6mpg on entry-level 520d, but they quickly rise to 243g/km on performance-orientated petrols.

Driving

Extremely comfortable ride – more so than the outgoing 5 Series Saloon – but excellent grip in cornering and no body roll to speak of. Different driving settings allows for different driving dynamics depending on your mood.

Feel

Incredibly refined; engine-, wind- and road-noise are all well suppressed and make motorway driving a pleasure.

Space

Boot is large at 520 litres and there’s plenty of space in the front and rear. Useful cubbies and practical touched throughout too.

Equipment

Climate control, front and rear electric windows and cruise control are on entry level models. Various additional kit will command a higher asking price.

Price

Expensive to buy, but resale values are fantastic. Running costs, especially on entry level models, are very manageable and company car drivers will love the frugal diesels.

Quality

Attention to detail is phenomenal, as are the materials. Reliability shouldn’t be a problem either. Bullet-proof BMW quality.

Safety

Six airbags and a cushioned bonnet, which improves pedestrian safety, are standard across the range, as is an all-in-one active safety package that includes stability, traction and brake control and hill start assist.

Pros

Great engine choices, wonderful to drive, spacious, refined.

Cons

Expensive to buy at higher specs; some strong competition in the sector.

Alternatives
