We say Too compromised by under-par performance too challenge rival hot hatches - or its predecessor -but decent fun.Performance The 2.0-litre 180bhp engine feels underpowered for a performance car and while the diesel isn't as fast it has more torque through the low gears.Emissions Not really an area a hot hatch will excel in, the Peugeot’s underpowered drive makes for decent savings in terms of efficiency.Driving Decent control around bends and a fairly smooth ride but it lacks the thrills expected for a range-topping hot hatch bearing the Gti name.Feel Noisy engines and some road noise penetrate the cabin. Not as refined as its 206 sibling, but this is to be expected.Space Good space for 2+2 adults and a decent boot – a rarity for a hot hatch.Equipment Alloys, leather, CD player and climate control as standard.Price The Peugeot 206 offers good prices and strong residuals. The diesel is considerably cheaper to run.Quality The interior could look more impressive but the car should be durable enough and the material used are all to a high standard.Safety Good safety kit meant four NCAP stars, but more modern cars regularly achieve five in the new, tougher test.Pros The Peugeot 206 Gti offers a good drive and more fun than the standard 206. The quality is high and the diesel is engine is a good, cost-conscious option.Cons It doesn’t totally convince as a hot hatch in terms of performance and styling.Alternatives Clio RenaultSport
