Performance
The 2.8-litre V8 Aero has the power and grunt with 276bhp available while the 1.8-litre petrol is underpowered. The 1.9-litre diesel is pitched about right and is the best allrounder in the range.
Emissions
The 1.9-litre diesel is the most efficient engine in the range, returning a respectable 51mpg and emitting 149g/km. Unfortunately alternatives in the estate segment are much more efficient.
Driving
Not a convincing ride: the car simply can't cope with the power the V8 throws out and it scuttles and shakes. Generally the range is tailored to comfortable rather than exciting driving.
Feel
Engines are generally quiet and refinement is excellent. That’s helped by a smooth ride from a soft suspension set-up, unfortunately that means it sometimes wallows and bounces over bumps and potholes.
Space
f you’re in the ront of the 9-3 then you’ll travel in comfort with plenty of legroom and a lots of headroom. Those in the back won’t necessarily be cramped but there is much less room for your legs. At the back is a 419-litre boot and with the rear seats folded down that increases to 1,273-litres.
Equipment
The Saab 9-3 is well kitted out and if you move up the trim levels there’s lots and lots of sophisticated kit available.
Price
With list prices starting from around £22,000 the 9-3 Sportwagon is competitive but rivals will ultimately win the battle as they offer much more for the money.
Quality
As ever, the 9-3 Sportwagon is solid and reliable but the interior is dull. There are decent quality materials throughout the cabin and not much hard plastic but it’s generally drab and uninspiring.

Five NCAP stars and plenty of safety and security kit.
Pros
The 9-3 Sportwagon is one of the best looking estates on the market and its styling makes it stick out from the rest of the crowd. It’s a brilliant cruiser and very reliable.
Cons
The 9-3 Sportwagon comes with a number of faults, namely practicality, drive and interior. That means it lags behind its executive rivals.
