We say Good solid SUV that should be reliable, capable off-road and fantastically underwhelming.Performance The engine line-up is comprised of a 2.0-litre unit and a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine. The former needs working hard and the latter is a monster, propelling the Forester to 62mph in under six seconds and generating 236lb-ft of torque.Emissions The 2.0-litre petrol engine is the most efficient in the range but it’s still not great, returning 33mpg and emitting a massive 204g/km in CO2.Driving Good off-road performance but the powerful 2.5-litre engines are not as assured on the road, leaning a bit around corners. Generally handling and ride are good though because it has such a low centre of gravity.Feel There’s a nice raspy noise to engines and the ride is excellent with its 4x4 capability coming to fore, absorbing bumps and potholes with ease.Space Good space upfront but tight in the back with head and legroom at a premium for three adults. The boot isn't massive at just 387-litres though rear seats split-fold and the tailgate splits too, freeing up a bit more space and making access simple.Equipment Electric windows, climate control, remote locking and alloys are standard. Leather, sunroof and xenon headlamps at higher specs. Satnav an option.Price Running costs are very high but list prices are good ranging from less than £17,000 to around £26,000, discounts should be available and residuals should hold up OK.Quality Should be tough and reliable inside and out. The interior is ok as well, which may come as a surprise given the utility badge that accompanies the Forester. It’s hardly high-quality but it’s logical and well laid out.Safety Front and side airbags and ABS are standard. Four-wheel drive should add to safety too. Deadlocks and alarms standard.Pros The Forester is a solid SUV and one that works comfortable both on and off road.
