Performance
There are two engines in the Wagon R’s range in the form of a 1.2-litre petrol and a larger 1.33-litre VVT unit. The VVT option, with 91bhp at its disposal, is the faster of the two and can reach 60mph in 12.4 seconds before reaching a top speed of 99mph; that sounds poor but it’s more than enough around the city.
Emissions
The smaller 1.2-litre unit is better off than its bigger stablemate in terms of fuel economy and CO2 emissions. It returns 47mpg and emits 144g/km compared to the 1.3-litre’s 44mpg and 150g/km.
Driving
The Wagon R focuses on urban, city driving and for that it’s ideal. It comes with light steering and a small turning circle that make it ideal for nipping about built-up areas. It’s not quite so good on open roads and more demanding routes where you notice bodyroll and the steering feels vague.
Feel
At speed, the Wagon R is noisy because its little engines need to be pushed. Fortunately its ride is ok and it copes well with uneven road surfaces.
Space
The Wagon R is a tall car so there’s plenty of head, leg and shoulder room for all passengers. There’s an enormous boot at the rear which expands massively when the rear seats are folded away.
Equipment
Air conditioning, central locking, CD player and electric windows. Higher trim adds metallic paint and auto box are options.
Price
The Wagon R is cheap to buy with prices for low-end models starting from less than £8,000 and growing to a little over £9,000. It’s not the cheapest to run however and is more expensive than the Vauxhall Agila, its big rival.
Quality
The Wagon R will be reliable because it’s a Suzuki and because there’s not enough equipment, mechanics and electronics to cause any serious problems. Inside it is outdated and fairly cheap looking.
Safety
Front airbags and ABS only gives the Wagon R quite a basic look.
Pros
The Wagon R is a niche car and an individual one at that. It is brilliantly set-up for urban driving and extremely cheap to buy.
Cons
The Wagon R comes with a poor interior and a limited engine line-up.
