We say Great looks, performance and handling - the best coupe in its price rangePerformance Out of the five models available, the circa-200bhp petrol offers the best balance of performance and practicality. All will do the job very well though but it’s the 207bhp unit that takes the performance accolades with a 0-60mph sprint time of 6.7 seconds. If you’re after pure performance however we’d move up to the Scirocco R.Emissions Between 134 and 189g/km isn’t too bad, neither is the 55mpg the entry-level diesel returns. Volkswagen has applied its BlueMotion eco-technology to the brilliant Scirocco, forcing CO2 emissions lower than on standard models to 118g/km. Fuel economy on BlueMotion versions stands at 62mpg, too.Driving Steering is very well-weighted and the car feels very well balanced. It’s based on the Golf so it handles brilliantly thanks in part to its low-slung profile and ground clearance, limiting bodyroll and improving grip. In general the Scirocco is comfortable but the ride is a little bit firm which can become uncomfortable over longer journeys on the UK’s pock-marked roads.Feel Petrol’s are very quiet but diesels are a bit boomy at high speeds. No other issues regarding noise here though. As mentioned the ride is firm but that’s ideal around corners.Space There’s ample space upfront and in the rear, but the boot is oddly shaped and pretty small at 292 litres, making access difficult and limiting luggage space.Equipment 18-inch alloys, leather steering wheel and climate control come as standard while the option list swells as you move up the specification levels on the Scirocco.Price It’s well priced, starting from around £20,000, and running costs are manageable on certain powertrains. Residuals are decent too adding to its allure.Quality As is the case with every Volkswagen, the Scirocco is mechanically sound, and the materials are durable. Overall the cabin is well put together and finished to a high quality. It’s also well laid out and despite sharing features with the rest of the golf family, the interior manages to look sufficiently different and more stylish than the rest of the range.Safety Six airbags, front head restraints and electronic stability control are fitted as standard.Pros The Scirocco comes with a wide and varied engine line-up which allows buyers to chose whether they want to focus on efficiency or performance. The drive is also excellent and enjoyable while the interior is comfortable and stylish.Cons The ride can become a little firm and uncomfortable on longer journeys and visibility out of the rear is compromised by its sleek profile.Alternatives Audi TT.
