We say Very quick yet understated, the Scirocco R is one of the best coupes - and a genuine hot coupe, if you will.Performance Using a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 261bhp, the R comes with either a manual or DSG automatic gearbox which determines the exact speed of the coupe. With the manual the coupe achieves 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds, a time cut to 5.6 seconds with the DSG. Either way this is good and the top speed is 155mph.Emissions Not too bad for a performance focused model, the Scirocco R with a manual gearbox achieves a fuel economy of 34mpg and emits 189g/km in CO2. These figures are improved to 35mpg and 187g/km respectively with the DSG automatic transmission.Driving The three-door Scirocco R is undoubtedly fast and handles well, especially in the dry where it sticks like glue, although in the wet it can become a little lively particularly in first and second gear.Feel The steering is weighty and accurate, while the accelerator and brake pedals bring rapid responses without feeling out of hand. No bodyroll is felt in the corners either.Space Inside the Scirocco R there are four seats including two adult sized ones in the rear. Getting in the front is straight forward enough but getting an adult in the back can prove challenging. The boot is only a modest 292 litres but it’s at least easy to load.Equipment The Scirocco R is packed with equipment provided as standard. LED daytime running lights, heated front seats and a touchscreen multi-media device are some of the highlights.Price The Scirocco R is priced at £29,745 if you choose the manual transmission, while the DSG automatic gearbox increases the total cost to £31,045.Quality All the materials and fitting are done nicely with great attention to detail. Proven mechanicals should last long as well. The seats are also comfortable and secure for passengers.Safety The Scirocco achieved a five star rating in the Euro NCAP crash safety test. The R coupe has numerous driving aids like traction control and anti lock brakes to help drivers keep control. A warning however, rear visibility is limited.Pros Stylish, fast and comfortable. The Scirocco R offers good performance figures and a fun drive.Cons It doesn’t come cheap, rear seat access can be tricky and visibility is limited in the rear to.Alternatives Renaultsport Megane, Seat Leon Cupra R
