Family drivers are always after lots of space and practicality from their vehicles, and 2019 has plenty of cars that will be offering just that.

5. Peugeot 508 SW
The French brand’s all-new estate is based on the recently-released saloon and is arguably even more attractive, thanks to the sleek roofline and sharp body creases. Coming with the stylish i-Cockpit interior that has all the important features angled towards the driver, the 508 SW’s cabin is really accommodating – while the rear load space is well-sized for most occasions. In the standard layout, the boot comes with 530 litres of room, but if you need the extra space, fold the rear seats down to access 1,780 litres.
4. Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace
As the seven-seat version of Volkswagen’s popular crossover, the Tiguan Allspace offers lots of space for families to use. With all seven chairs in place, the boot space is only 230 litres, but most of the time that won’t be the case – so with the rearmost seats folded down you’ll have 700 litres to work with. If you fold all the seats down, you get 1,775 litres of room, which should be more than enough for most people to work with.
3. Skoda Superb Estate
The Czech estate version comes with one of the largest load spaces in the class – 660 litres – which can be extended to 1,950 litres, which is rather cavernous indeed. Skoda is well-skilled at making its cars comfortable for all, and the Superb has plenty of head and legroom for those of all ages and sizes sitting in the back. Standard kit is also great, with leather upholstery, an eight-inch touchscreen and safety systems included.
2. BMW 5 Series Touring
The 5 Series is one of the best cars on the road, full stop. But for families, the comfortable and spacious estate can provide great memories on longer journeys, while also being excellent for day-to-day driving. The 570-litre is more than large enough for a family’s luggage, but if not all are on board and you need the extra space, the rear bench folds flat to reveal a 1,700-litre load space. The Touring also comes with all the tech you might ever need, with a large touchscreen infotainment system being the centrepiece of the cabin.
1. Land Rover Discovery
The passenger room on offer Land Rover’s seven-seat SUV is excellent whatever the layout. Dropping the rearmost seats provides you with 1,137 litres, while all five rear seats down offers up 2,406 litres. As a Land Rover, it can also go pretty much anywhere it wants thanks to its clever Terrain Response 2 system, while the interior is comfortable, finished in high quality materials and comes with plenty of great equipment. The Discovery really offers everything you want from a large family car, securing it the top spot on our list.
