Mini is one of the key British automotive success stories of recent years, and it’s been the iconic Hatch that’s been the best-selling of them all.
It’s still produced in Oxford and continues to be one of the UK’s most popular cars, and with the option to have it as both a three- or more practical five-door, it’s a very attractive option. Delivering cool styling, an upmarket interior and a fun driving experience, it ticks all the right boxes for a small car.
Let’s look at what the 2022 range has to offer.
What engines are available?
Mini axed its diesel models a few years ago, and while there is an Electric version available, the standard Hatch is purely available with a range of petrol engines using the familiar One, Cooper, Cooper S and John Cooper Works names. It’s worth noting that the full range is available with the option of a manual or automatic gearbox, unlike rivals.
Let’s start with the entry-level One, which features a 101bhp 1.5-litre unit. Despite its relatively mild figure, it can still go from 0-60mph in around 10 seconds and can reach a top speed of 120mph. It’s the most efficient model, too, returning up to 52.3mpg, with CO2 emissions of 122g/km.
The Cooper is the most popular version, and uses a 134bhp 1.5-litre petrol that can take the Mini from 0-60mph in eight seconds and to a 130mph top speed. It’s not bad on fuel, either, with 51.4mpg claimed, and CO2 emissions of 124g/km.
If you’d like more of a hot hatch, the Cooper S gets a 176bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine that can manage 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds and 146mph when maxed out. Mini also claims around 45mpg and 140g/km CO2 emissions.
At the top of the range, the John Cooper Works has a 228bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine, allowing for a 0-60mph time of six seconds and 153mph top speed. It’s unsurprisingly the thirstiest model in the range, with a claimed fuel economy figure of 41.5mpg, and CO2 emissions of 156g/km.
What trim levels are offered?
Unlike other brands, Mini offers one standard specification and then customers can choose between various ‘styles’. Full details and prices are as follows.
All Mini Hatches benefit from LED headlights, rear LED lights with a Union Jack design, ambient lighting and cruise control. You also get automatic lights and wipers, air conditioning and an 8.8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay.
Classic – from £17,405
The Classic gets you the option of 15- or 16-inch alloy wheels (depending on engine), a sport leather steering wheel and piano black exterior trim.
Sport – from £21,805
The Sport gets styling inspired by the John Cooper Works, with its 17-inch black alloy wheels, black roof and mirrors, JCW badging, sports seats, anthracite headlining, rear parking sensors, adaptive suspension and adjustable driving modes.
Shadow Edition – from £22,840
Based on the Sport, the limited-run Shadow Edition brings larger 18-inch John Cooper Works alloy wheels, Midnight Black metallic paint and a full Piano Black exterior package. It also gets a silver roof and mirrors, along with special trim pieces and decals.
Exclusive – from £21,805
The more luxurious Exclusive model comes with the option of 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels, along with leather sports seats, a nappa leather steering wheel and ‘Mini Yours’ badging.
John Cooper Works – from £27,615
The sporty John Cooper Works brings sports suspension, a JCW styling kit, red detailing, upgraded brakes, leather and Dinamica sports seats, stainless steel pedals and variable driving modes, though you are mainly paying for the additional performance.
What about personalisation?
If you want to personalise your car, you’re in the right place with the Mini. It’s possibly one of the most customisable cars on sale, with a range of colour options on offer, including British Racing Green, Island Blue and Enigmatic Black being particular highlights.
You can also choose to have bonnet stripes, different coloured mirrors and roof, along with a Multi-tone roof, which features various colours laid over one another. There are a range of alloy wheel designs you can choose too.
Inside, a raft of leather options are available, including cream, black, and brown, while after this there’s a huge range of option packs on offer. The £1,600 Comfort Plus Pack, for example, brings heated seats, keyless entry, a reversing camera and folding mirrors,, while the £800 Driving Assistant Pack brings adaptive cruise control, high beam assist and speed limit assist. Individual optional extras available include adaptive Matrix LED headlights (£500), a Harman Kardon sound system (£600) and panoramic sunroof (£700).
