When motorists are looking for a new family car to buy, many go for an option from the MPV sector. That’s because MPVs can offer a lot of space, versatility, family-friendly cabins and a comfortable ride that’s good for long-distance trips.
But what is it exactly that’s required for a car to be classed as an MPV? What is the meaning of 'MPV' and what makes a good MPV? All of these questions are addressed in this guide.
What does MPV stand for in cars?
MPV stands for ‘Multi-Purpose Vehicle’. This type of car is sometimes referred to by alternative names such as ‘minivan’ or ‘people carrier’.
Different-sized MPVs are usually given more specific titles to distinguish them further. For instance, the smaller (possibly supermini-based) offerings in the market are often referred to as Compact MPVs or Mini MPVs.
A bigger MPV which has a significantly spacious interior and which is noticeably larger than family hatchbacks may be referred to as a Large MPV. Some of the largest MPVs on the market are based on vans which end up having their cargo area replaced with seating areas.
What is the difference between MPV and SUV?
Both types of cars offer spacious, practical motoring that appeals to families. But the main things which distinguish an MPV from an SUV is that while a MPV traditionally has a boxy profile, an SUV’s body has more of an estate car shape, albeit with chunkier body panels.
Both MPVs and SUVs can have tall ride heights but SUV models will be taller because of their tendency to offer off-road driving capabilities. However, some MPVs may offer a specification which is tuned to make it suitable for mild off-road driving, with a taller ride height and with chunkier body panels for example.
