A big change is coming to the driving theory test on April 14

From April 14, the theory test will see video clips replace written scenarios.

A major change is set to come to the driving theory test, which will come into effect on April 14.

Gone from the test will be written scenarios, with video clips set to replace them. Learners will need to watch a clip of up to 30 seconds in length before answering three questions based on it.

The change has been confirmed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), following on from research that found those with reading difficulties and disabilities felt more comfortable with video scenarios than written ones.

It worked with the National Autistic Society, the British Dyslexia Association and the British Deaf Association on the change. Scenarios could include a car shown driving through a town or on a country lane, with questions including those on safe overtaking and vulnerable road users.

John Rogers, of community interest company Disability Driving Instructors, said: “A picture paints a thousand words, especially for candidates with special educational needs.

“Having to go back and forth between the text in the written scenario and the written questions and answers was a big obstacle to understanding what was required. Video scenarios should prove much easier to follow and the questions will hopefully appear more relevant.”
