BMW 8 Series goes through final testing in Wales

The upcoming flagship coupe will be officially unveiled later this year, with BMW testing the top-end M850i to improve the model’s dynamics.

The BMW 8 Series is going through its final stages of development in Wales before its release later this year.

The top-level coupe on test is the pinnacle of the range – the M850i xDrive – which is fitted with a newly-developed V8 engine, four-wheel drive and the latest performance technology.

With testing taking place on public roads and on racetracks, BMW is reintroducing the 8 Series moniker that has been out of circulation since the late 1990s, and it will come in both a two-door and four-door Gran Coupe guise.

The eight-cylinder, 522bhp power unit will be paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends the power to the rear-biased, all-wheel drive system.

It also comes with an active rear differential, electronically controlled dampers and dynamic stability control, allowing the driver to set the car up as they want it.

Information found in this final stage of testing will be implemented to the final vehicle before its release.

Markus Flasch, 8 Series project manager, said: “The thing that always impresses when test driving the new BMW 8 Series Coupe is its adaptability.

“Whether a driver expresses his or her wishes with regard to comfort and sportiness using the accelerator pedal or by pressing a button, the vehicle immediately adapts perfectly to each setting.”

The 8 Series will come with an M version at some point in 2019, with the M8 Gran Coupe concept displayed at the Geneva Motor Show a taster of what is to come.
