BMW showcases its future by revealing new iX SUV

The new model features a wealth of technological and electrical developments

BMW has revealed its much-anticipated iX electric SUV – a model that will pave the way for technology and self-driving capabilities for the brand.

Called the ‘iNEXT’ throughout its development, which is still ongoing, the new car will adopt the name ‘iX’ when it arrives in showrooms at the end of 2021.

It sits on an all-new platform for the brand, and BMW says the iX is the “first representation of a trailblazing generation of cars poised to redefine the driving experience, the feeling of interior space and the relationship between a vehicle and those on board”.

The iX will follow on from the iX3 SUV, and will become the first dedicated electric SUV from the brand while also using BMW’s fifth-generation ‘eDrive’ electrification technology. While full powertrain details are yet to be confirmed, BMW says it will produce more than 500bhp and feature a 100kWh battery enabling a range of up to 373 miles. A 0-60mph time of just five seconds is promised in its most powerful guise.

It will also be equipped with 200kW fast charging, meaning the iX’s large battery could be topped up from 10 to 80 per cent in 40 minutes.

Autonomous driving capabilities are high on the priority list, too, while it will also be capable of utilising the latest 5G technology.

In terms of styling, it utilises BMW’s large new kidney grille design – though is blanked off here and instead integrates all the cameras and sensors needed to enable the potential self-driving properties. It also features slim headlights, integrated ‘pop-out’ door handles and blue accents, the latter being a trademark feature on the brand’s EVs.

BMW promises a ‘luxurious, lounge-like’ interior with high levels of spaciousness, though it is a five-seater (rather than a seven). Elsewhere in the cabin, it comes with a curved touchscreen, a new polygonal steering wheel and a generally minimalist design throughout. The large digital dial screen also runs into the large new touchscreen.

Further details are expected about the iX in the run up to series production beginning in the second half of next year.
