BMW unveils new 128ti hot hatch

The new front-wheel-drive model sits alongside the hotter all-wheel-drive M135i

BMW is introducing a second hot hatch to its range in the form of the new 128ti.

Shown in prototype form a few weeks ago, the new model has now been shown off in full, and aims to offer a purer driving experience thanks to adopting front-wheel-drive, and go on to rival the likes of Volkswagen’s Golf GTi.

The new hot hatch revives the ‘ti’ name – or ‘Turismo Internazionale’ – and features a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 261bhp and 400Nm of torque, which is 41bhp down on the M135i model. That said, the 128ti can still sprint to 60mph in 5.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 155mph.

Unlike the all-wheel-drive M135i, the 128ti is a front-wheel-drive hatch, though still uses an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic gearbox, and is 80kg lighter than BMW’s more powerful 1 Series.

You also get performance features such as a Torsen limited-slip differential that maximises grip by sending torque to the wheel with the most traction.

It’s based on the M Sport specification, though gains a revised styling kit adopted from the M135i, but this time painted in red, and comes with ‘ti’ badges throughout the exterior and interior. It also arrives with a new set of 18-inch alloy wheels.

The red accents continue throughout the interior, with a ‘ti’ logo stitched in the headrest. Red leather sports seats can also be found on the options list. Other standard kit includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen, heated seats and ambient lighting.

BMW will launch the 128ti in November, with prices starting from £32,995, which is a significant saving off the M135i’s £37,470 starting price.
