Citroen C5X: What you need to know

Citroen C5X: What you need to know

Citroen is re-entering the large car segment with its C5 X

Citroen is no stranger to the large car market, but in recent years it’s become better known for its smaller city cars and crossovers.

But later this year, Citroen will return to this more premium market with the C5 X – the first time the French marque has competed here for more than half a decade.

But what do you need to know about the C5 X? Let’s take a look.

It’s a blend of three body styles

Citroen is no stranger to making sure it stands out from the crowd, and the C5 X is a perfect showcase of this, as it does things very differently to just about all its rivals.

So, rather than making the C5 X as purely a saloon or modelling into it an SUV, the French firm’s decided to combine a range of body styles to create something truly unique – with noticeable saloon and estate car styling cues, but with with the raised ride height and chunky looks that are more associated with an SUV. It’s certainly a rather different proposition to other models in its segment.

Impressive comfort promised

Above all else, Citroens are acclaimed for their comfort, with all its models offering some of the most cosseted driving experiences around.

And unsurprisingly as Citroen’s flagship, the C5 X also aims to impress in this area. The French marque says it offers ‘warmth, tranquility and space’ and aims to offer a ride quality like a ‘magic carpet’. It’s fitted with features like ‘Advanced Comfort Seats’ that offer greater support and padding, along with ‘Progressive Hydraulic Cushions’ in the suspension that aim to allow the car to glide over the surface.

Plug-in hybrid version to be available

Citroen has really ramped up its range of electrified models in the past couple of years, with a number of EVs and hybrids on the market. The C5 X will also continue down this path, with this model also set to be offered as a plug-in hybrid, along with more conventional petrol engines.

This plug-in model will combine a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and battery for a combined 222bhp. Citroen claims it can travel on electric for 31 miles when fully charged, and that it can travel at motorway speeds still on electricity, making it ideal for those with shorter commutes.

Set to be brimmed with technology

Perhaps unsurprisingly for a model that will head up Citroen’s range, the C5 X is absolutely brimmed with technology.

It introduces a new 12-inch touchscreen system that comes with wireless smartphone charging and mirroring, while also getting a large head-up display so that the driver doesn’t have to take their eyes off the road. Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capability will also be offered, thanks to a feature that’s able to combine adaptive cruise control with lane keep assist.

Practical interior

Citroen already offers a range of practical family cars – from the Berlingo MPV to the C5 Aircross MPV – and the C5 X will be another model that’s well-suited to those looking for something roomy.

The firm says that those in the rear seats ‘benefit from a spacious layout that invites rest and relaxation’, while the 545-litre boot is a great size, and extends to 1,640 litres once the rear seats are folded.

The new Citroen C5 X will go on sale later in 2021.
