Jeep Wrangler 80th Anniversary: Here’s what you need to know

The iconic off-roader is helping Jeep mark eight decades of sales

Among all of Jeep’s models, it’s undoubtedly the Wrangler that’s the most iconic.

Its rugged and chunky styling harks back to Jeep’s past Willys and CJ models, and the Wrangler remains key to this brand’s off-road image. Given its importance, it’s not surprising that the American marque is using it to help mark its 80th anniversary in 2021.

Here’s what you need to know about it, and also the 2021 model range.

New exterior styling helps to mark the occasion

Though the 80th Anniversary Edition is predominantly focused on the visuals, the changes it gets really help it to stand out from the crowd.

Highlights include new Neutral Grey detailing for the grille, headlight and fog light bezels, while this Wrangler also comes equipped with a unique set of 18-inch alloy wheels. It also gets plenty of special edition badging, too, including noticeably on the front wheel arches and also the tailgate.

Plenty of interior changes too

It’s not just the exterior of the Wrangler that benefits from tweaks as part of this anniversary, though, as Jeep has also introduced a raft of changes in the cabin.

There are new black leather seats with tungsten stitching and a special 80th Anniversary badge, while it’s also equipped with a leather-wrapped dashboard with contrast stitching and high-quality Berber floor mats. This is in addition to the Wrangler’s already comprehensive standard equipment, including an 8.4-inch touchscreen brimmed with features and a nine-speaker Alpine sound system.

Bold colour choices

Though you might expect the Wrangler to purely come in ‘tougher’ colours like blacks and greys, a highlight of this Jeep has always been the fact you can get it in surprisingly bright and colourful shades.

Jeep is continuing that theme, with the introduction of three bright new colours to choose from. First up is the amusingly-named Nacho Clear Coat, followed by Hydo Blue, Sarge Green (pictured) and Snazzberry, which is a stylish dark red.

Enhanced off-roading ability

The Wrangler’s off-roading prowess is already one of the best things about it, but Jeep isn’t getting complacent, and is introducing additional features on the latest model year.

Selec-Speed control is a new off-road cruise control that aims to keep a constant speed during rock crawling and other slow manoeuvres, while you can deflate the tyres using the car’s touchscreen system for greater off-roading ability as you don’t want the rubber to be too solid.

Top-spec Rubicon models also get a new ‘Off-Road+’ mode that can tweak the powertrain and chassis specifically for driving on sand and rocks.

The Wrangler becomes petrol only

Elsewhere, Jeep has taken the decision to stop offering the Wrangler with a diesel engine, and will now just sell it with a 268bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine in the UK.

Tweaks have been made to it though to improve efficiency, with the unit now delivering 10g/km of CO2 less than its predecessor.

The Jeep Wrangler 80th Anniversary is on sale now.
