Koenigsegg has claimed the crown of world’s fastest production car — with an astonishing average speed of 277.9mph.
Set on a closed highway in Nevada, the Swedish hypercar manufacturer used a customer’s Agera RS to take the record, hitting 284mph in one direction and 272mph in the other.
The speed was recorded by data logging experts Racelogic — who have previously overseen top speed runs of the Hennessey Venom GT.
The Guinness World Record for the highest top speed in a production car is still held by Bugatti and its Veyron Super Sport, with 267.8mph, but this latest run proves Koenigsegg has the machinery to challenge that.
Perhaps most impressively, the Agera RS ran off-the-shelf Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber, albeit with technicians on hand from the French tyre manufacturer to oversee the record.
Powering the now-world’s fastest production car is a 5.0-litre, twin turbocharged V8 engine that develops 1,341bhp in optional 1 Megawatt spec — meaning the car has a power to weight ratio of 977bhp per ton — compare that to around 160bhp per ton for a Ford Fiesta ST.
It’s the same model that set a new world record for 0-249-0mph earlier this year — in just 36.44 seconds.
The customer car used is just one of 25 examples of Agera RS produced.
