BMW has unveiled the new drop-top Convertible version of its 4 Series, which gains bold styling and a new electric fabric roof.
Following the unveil of the 4 Series Coupe earlier this year, BMW has now announced the new Convertible version. Unlike its predecessor, it uses a fabric soft-top, which can be lowered in 19 seconds and at speeds up to 31mph.
The fabric roof comes in black as standard, though an anthracite colour is available as an optional extra. BMW says it offers much better “acoustic and thermal comfort” than a traditional soft-top, yet is 40 per cent lighter than a standard metal folding roof.
Like the 4 Series Coupe, it gains that model’s bold front end – notably its front grille – and comes with LED headlights as standard. It’s also slightly longer than its predecessor, with a notable longer wheelbase improving passenger space.
The range also now starts with an M Sport trim level, with an M Sport Pro Edition also available and ‘M’ performance models heading up the range. Standard equipment includes electric sports seats, leather upholstery and 18-inch alloy wheels, along with BMW’s latest 10.25-inch media system and 12.3-inch digital dials.
At launch the 187bhp 2.0-litre diesel (420d) kicks off the range, which also includes mild-hybrid technology. A 181bhp 2.0-litre petrol (420i) is the most affordable petrol option, while the 254bhp 430i is a sportier alternative.
At the top of the range sits the new M440i xDrive, which features a 369bhp 3.0-litre petrol and all-wheel-drive – all other 4 Series Convertible variants favour a rear-wheel-drive setup. Until the M4 Convertible arrives, the M440i serves as the most powerful model – accelerating to 60mph in 4.7 seconds and reaching a top speed of 155mph. All models feature an eight-speed automatic gearbox, with further diesel engines will also join the range later next year.
The new 4 Series Convertible is priced from £45,785 – a substantial £6,000 more than the Coupe. First deliveries are expected in March 2021.
