Range Rover Velar named Most Beautiful Car in the World

Land Rover’s striking Range Rover Velar SUV was praised for its modern touches and engineering at the awards ceremony in New York.

The Range Rover Velar has been named as the most beautiful car of the year at the World Car Awards held at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

Land Rover’s swooping luxury SUV has been praised highly for its looks by the panel, thanks to its modern flair, elegance and engineering.

The Velar, which sits above the Range Rover Evoque and below the Range Rover Sport in the range, was awarded the title for World Car Design of the Year at the New York show, taking the award from its sister product – the Jaguar F-Pace SUV – that won in 2017.

CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, Dr Ralf Speth, said the award “means a lot to us”.

He said: “The F-Type, Evoque, F-Pace and now the Range Rover Velar wins the World Car of the Year design award. This means a lot to us. I feel very honoured and want to thank all jury members for their trust and supporting encouraging the Land Rover team to continue on their own path.”

The Range Rover Velar is named after the original codename for the Range Rover concept in the 1960s. It features ‘flush deployable door handles” that pop out, matrix laser LED headlights and a double ‘Touch Pro Duo’ touchscreen, three design highlights of it.

The Range Rover Velar managed to beat off the Lexus LC 500 and Volvo XC60 for the award, which is voted for by a motoring jury made up of 82 journalists from across 24 countries.

Six powertrains are available, ranging from a 178bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine to a 375bhp 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine. The Range Rover Velar costs from £44,830.
