Skoda releases more details on upcoming Scala

As well as showing the model under heavy camouflage, Skoda unveiled key information about its new compact car.

Skoda has unveiled more information about its next compact model, the Scala, which is set to be revealed in December.

The Czech brand says the Scala will be fitted with one of four engines and given a range of high-end safety systems – making it one of the most advanced Skodas yet.

Customers will be able to choose from three petrol options – ranging from the entry level 1.0-litre TSI that develops 94bhp, a 1.0-litre 113bhp unit and the top-end 1.5-litre 148bhp TSI – and a 1.6-litre diesel unit that develops 113bhp. All are turbocharged and come with start/stop technology and brake energy recovery.

The Scala will also be the first Skoda to be fitted with scrolling rear indicators, and the first in Europe to come with Skoda lettering on the rear instead of the brand’s badge.

Skoda also says that the Scala will come with a range of safety assist technology, such as the optional side assist – which incorporates blind spot assist and rear traffic alert – and adaptive cruise control. Lane assist and front assist emergency braking come as standard, and park assist is available as an option.

The new compact car can also be fitted with an optional 10.25-inch virtual cockpit instrument display to go alongside a 9.2-inch infotainment touchscreen.

Skoda chief executive officer Bernhard Meier said: “With the new Skoda Scala we are opening a new chapter in the Skoda compact car segment. It is a completely new product which sets benchmarks in this segment with regards to technology, safety and design.

“The Scala perfectly embodies the Skoda‑typical smart understatement. We are convinced that the Scala has the best chance to redefine Skoda’s A-car segment.”

The Scala is slated to be a replacement for the Rapid – which has been on sale since 2011 – and will incorporate details from the recently revealed Vision RS concept.
