Volvo sets September sales record in crucial new 70 plate month

The firm’s XC40 SUV was also one of the most popular cars last month

Volvo has announced that it has set a new sales record for September, a crucial month for manufacturers as it’s when the latest number plate was introduced.

Last month saw the first ‘70’ plates joining UK roads, and despite figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showing that new car sales had fallen by four per cent, Volvo increased its registrations by four per cent – setting a new record for September.

The Swedish manufacturer registered 9,147 models in September, with the firm’s compact XC40 SUV proving to be the most popular. As well as being the top-selling car in its class, it was also the ninth most popular car overall for the month, with sales ahead of more traditional best-sellers like the Ford Focus. With 5,653 XC40s being registered, it means it accounts for more than half of its registrations.

Following the XC40, SUVs continue to lead the way with the XC60 and XC90 both being the most popular models, ahead of the firm’s more traditional saloon and estate car options.

A range of electrified powertrains are said to be behind the new sales record, with every Volvo model available with a plug-in hybrid option. At the start of next year buyers will also be able to choose a new electric version of the XC40 – this being the firm’s first EV.

Matt Galvin, Volvo Car UK commercial operations director, said: “While no one wishes to see the UK’s car market in decline, we can celebrate a remarkable achievement in our record-breaking September sales.

“Now more than ever, people want to make sure they are getting the best products and value for their money, and they are increasingly putting their faith in Volvo. With the benefit of a first-class retail network and a completely renewed product range, and having seized the initiative with electrification, we are perfectly positioned to build on this success.”
